The Cleveland Cavaliers held their annual Wine and Gold scrimmage at Quicken Loans Arena on Monday night. It was the fans first chance to see Dwyane Wade and all of the other new additions in their Cavs jersey’s…albeit practice jersey’s for the first time. Lebron James sat out as he recovers from a sprained ankle suffered in practice a few days ago. Rookie Cedi Osman also sat out as he is nursing a back injury also suffered in practice. Neither injuries are serious and both should return to the floor soon. Now about the scrimmage…
Lue started the wine team out with the group of Derrick Rose, J.R. Smith, Dwyane Wade, Jae Crowder and Kevin Love at center. The Gold team starters featured Jose Calderon, Kyle Korver, Iman Shumpert, Jeff Green and Tristan Thompson.
Derrick Rose looked very quick and explosive. He had a couple nice explosive moves in the lane and strong finishes at the rim. Rose definitely looks motivated to prove he can get back to being the explosive rim attacking player that he used to be.
It was pretty surreal watching Dwyane Wade as a Cleveland Cavalier. He looked very fluid running the point with the second team. Wade was able to find Korver several times for wide open three point shots. His playmaking ability is going to do wonders for this team. Korver was dead on with his jumper nailing several shots from long distance.
Two lesser name players who had nice games were Ante Zizic and John Holland. Zizic was strong around the rim and ran the floor very well. Holland flashed his outside shooting ability as well as his athleticism on both ends of the floor. He is one of the Cavaliers two-way G-league players.
Kevin Love hit a few shots but overall had a quiet game. Edy Tavares is a very large man! It was entertaining watching him mix it up in the paint a few times with Kendrick Perkins.
Overall the ball movement was great and the offense played at a fast pace. It will take some time for the new lineups to gel. When they do it will be a lot of fun to watch.
Coach Ty Lue confirmed the report that Kevin Love will start at center moving Tristan Thompson to the bench.
“Kevin just gives us spacing on the floor,” Lue said. “He’s a great passer, 5’s have to get out and try to guard him on the pick and roll with LeBron (James) and D Rose (Derrick Rose) and those guys making plays, so it’s going to be tough for those guys. We liked it. The biggest thing is, Tristan has been a big part of what we do.”
Tristan Thompson has taken the change in stride as he wants what is best for the team to win another championship. He spoke about his new role after the scrimmage.
The overall depth on this team is pretty amazing. When Isaiah Thomas is ready to play they will be even deeper. If they can keep this roster healthy this should be a fun season for Cavaliers fans.
The Cavaliers open up pre-season play on Wednesday night at the Q vs the Atlanta Hawks. Lebron James will sit out as his ankle continues to heal.
