Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose impressing early for Cavaliers

We are only two games into the preseason but the early reviews on guards Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose have been very good.  Wade has been starting at small forward in place of the injured Lebron James while Rose is starting at point guard while Isaiah Thomas continues his rehab.

Dwyane Wade was spectacular in preseason game number two on Friday night against the Pacers.  In 22 minutes Wade put up 20 points on 10-14 shooting along with five rebounds.  Wade scored in a variety of ways from turn around jumpers to driving layups to channeling his inner fountain of youth on a thunderous reverse dunk in the second quarter.  Early on Wade looks refreshed and ready to help the Cavaliers make another NBA Finals run.  He is still getting used to Cleveland and the Cavaliers organization but having his good buddy Lebron James around certainly is helping smooth the transition. The team already seems to be building great chemistry and Wade is appreciative of his new teammates.

“It’s a veteran group,” Wade said. “Guys have welcomed me with open arms and just, we all just fit. First of all we’re just happy to be playing together. I don’t think any of us can believe we are together, still. But coach does a great job and the staff does a great job of breaking down each individual teams and units, where we get comfortable running our offense together.”

Once Lebron returns from his sprained ankle Wade is expected to run the point with the second unit and give the second team a much needed playmaker.  Coach Tyronn Lue will need to monitor Wade’s regular season minutes in an effort to keep his legs fresh for the playoffs.

Derrick Rose is out to prove that he is still an elite NBA point guard.  After a good 2016/2017 season with the Knicks in which he averaged 18 points per game Rose is looking to re-establish himself in a championship environment with the Cavaliers. In the first two preseason games Rose has shown an explosive first step blowing by defenders and attacking the rim.  He had a fantastic game Friday night against the Pacers scoring 15 points on 5-8 shooting in 14 minutes.  Rose also added three rebounds and 3 assists while not committing a turnover.  The surprising aspect of his game thus far is his outside shot.  Rose is not known as being a strong three point shooter but against the Pacers he hit on both of his three point attempts.  The 22% career shooter from behind the arc worked hard on his outside shot this offseason and plans on using the three as a weapon this season with Cleveland.  While Rose will play more minutes early on the long term goal is to limit his minutes and keep him healthy all season.  Once Isaiah Thomas returns he will certainly aid in doing so.
