Latest news and notes from the Cleveland Cavaliers training camp and preseason…
-Lebron James to return to lineup Tuesday vs Chicago
Lebron James will give it a go on Tuesday night at Quicken Loans Arena against the Chicago Bulls in preseason game number four. James missed the first three preseason games with a sprained ankle.
-Dwyane Wade named starting two guard…J.R. Smith to bench
On Monday coach Tyronn Lue told reporters that he would start the season with Dwyane Wade at the two guard and move J.R. Smith to the second unit. The starting lineup will be Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Lebron James, Jae Crowder and Kevin Love.
-Channing Frye out of rotation
Tyronn Lue notified veteran forward Channing Frye that he would not be in the player rotation and would see limited playing time this season. The 34 year old Frye averaged 9.1 points in 19 minutes per game last season with the Cavs. Frye took the news well and told Lue he would do whatever is best to help the team win.
-Derrick Rose to spend time running the 2nd unit
Derrick Rose will begin the season as the starting point guard. Rose will be subbed out in the first quarter and will spend time running the 2nd unit. Once Isaiah Thomas returns Rose will come off the bench full time but until then he will split time between the 1st and 2nd units.
-Richard Jefferson could be odd man out
The Cavaliers need to cut their 20-man training camp roster down to 17 (15 guaranteed and two 2-way G-League). It is expected that Kendrick Perkins and either Kay Felder or Edy Tavares will be non-guaranteed contract roster casualties…with Felder or Tavares getting the second two-way contract. One guaranteed contract will have to be terminated and Jefferson is the favorite. General Manager Koby Altman recently met with Jefferson and his agent to discuss his future.
-Jeff Green posterizes Washington’s Iam Mahinmi
In Sunday’s preseason game vs the Wizards reserve forward Jeff Green posted a monster dunk on Wizards backup center Iam Mahinmi. Here is the video:
The Cavaliers will play the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night in Cleveland before wrapping up the preseason schedule on Friday night in Orlando against the Magic. The much anticipated regular season opener is next Tuesday, October 17th in Cleveland vs Kyrie Irving and the Boston Celtics.
