Kent State opened the 2017/2018 season with a 111-78 win over Youngstown State on Saturday night at Akron’s J.A.R. Arena. The reigning Mid American Conference tournament champions put up 65 second half points to put the game away. The game featured a high octane above the rim offense from the Golden Flashes.
2017 MAC Tournament MVP Jaylin Walker lead the way with 20 points on 6/12 shooting while also dishing out 5 assists. Center Adonis De La Rosa dominated in the paint putting up 20 points and 8 rebounds in only 13 minutes. The 7’0″ 261 lb center took advantage of the smaller front line of the Penguins. Kent dominated the paint outscoring Youngstown 72-20. They also outrebounded the Penguins 57-41. Point guard Jalen Avery added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Danny Pippen contributed 13 points and 8 boards off the Kent State bench.
They game stayed close in the first half as Kent held a 46-41 lead at halftime. They opened up the second half on a 10-2 run on their way to outscoring Youngstown 65-37 to finish off the lopsided victory.
Kent State will face Ohio Christian on Thursday in their home opener.
