Kent State defeated Mississippi Valley State on Sunday 80-67 moving them to 3-0 on the season. Jaylin Walker lead the scoring with 19 points. Adonis De La Rosa was once again big in the middle posting his second straight double/double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jalen Avery recorded a career high 10 assists.

In their first three games to open the 2017/2018 season Kent has defeated Youngstown State, Ohio Christian and Mississippi Valley State by a combined score of 281-190. Jaylin Walker is leading the way averaging 17.3 points per game. The 2017 MAC Tournament MVP is shooting 41% from three point range. Walker is well on his way to leading his team in scoring and becoming the go to guy for the 2017/2018 squad. He is considered one of the premier players in the MAC conference.

Coach Rob Senderoff knew replacing Jimmy Hall’s 19 points and 10.6 rebounds per game would be a challenge. Thus far 7′ center Adonis De La Rosa has successfully accepted that challenge. Through the first three games he is averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds and almost one block. De La Rosa has given coach Senderoff a presence in the paint both offensively and defensively.

Another returning starter playing well to start the season is point guard Jalen Avery. Although he only took four shots in Sunday’s win he did a great job of facilitating the offense putting up a career high 10 assists. Avery is averaging 8.7 points and 5.7 assists.

Second year forward Danny Pippen has provided a scoring punch off of the bench in the first three games. He is averaging 11.7 points and 3 blocked shots per game. Senior guard Desmond Ridenour has also been solid off of the bench averaging 8.7 points per game.

Rob Senderoff will go 10 deep most games. Coming into this season depth was concern but so far he has gotten solid production from the bench crew. In order for the Golden Flashes to have a shot at winning the MAC the team will have to play with consistency and continue to get solid play and leadership from the returning starters.

After a home game on Tuesday against SE Louisiana the Golden Flashes have a home date with a solid Valparaiso squad on Friday and tough road test on December 6th against #15 Xavier.
